Clooney Hall Methodist Church

The present Clooney Hall Methodist Church was 100 years old in September l996. The deteriorating fabric of the Church and ancillary halls has been giving cause for grave concern and since 1971 successive Circuit Commissions have pointed to major problems in the structure of the building. There is insufficient space for every aspect of the Mission's work The problems have been compounded by the recent storm damage and further confirmed by an adverse Structural Engineer's Report. The work of the Mission cannot continue to function in the present building at Clooney Hall.

Clooney Hall has always been at the centre of Mission work. It is the Mission Church. Perfectly sited in the centre of the Waterside, it is surrounded by mature housing, with further new housing and business developments being planned in the immediate area. Environmental Health officials have recently indicated serious problems connected with the premises. Poor safety and inadequate toilet facilities make it almost impossible for activities and organisations to function.

We must look to the future of Methodism in Londonderry. We are embarking on a major project which will include the complete demolition of Clooney Hall and the construction of a new suite of buildings on the existing site. The plans include a Church to meet the needs of the present and future Clooney Hall people with a vibrant, worshipping and praying congregation being central to the work of the Mission. The new complex will also incorporate a Mission and Family Centre, thus ensuring a double thrust of evangelism and social concern for the Millenium and beyond.

This concept of a Mission and Family Centre is that the work presently being carried out in the name of Methodism in the Waterside area of Londonderry may not only be continued but expanded. It is proposed that the Centre would serve a multiplicity of users from the local community and act as a visible focus to the continuing cross-community, peace and reconciliation efforts of the Methodist City Mission. The proposal, whilst initially seen as benefiting the Waterside area of Londonderry, is aimed at servicing the whole city.

The development of this third Clooney Hall complex will provide a home for the congregation, administrative headquarters for the Mission's work and a venue for meetings, conferences and exhibitions.

The Londonderry City Mission would value the prayers and support of the Connexion in this exciting and imaginative venture.
